It is hard to predict what exactly will happen in House of the Dragon Season 3 without the context of Season 2, but there are some indications of where the series will go next. Season 2 is set to debut this summer, hitting Max and HBO on June 16, roughly two years after Season 1 debuted.

House Of The Dragon - Episode 3 Review

An HBO spokesperson, who confirmed to Deadline that Season 2 will contain 8 episodes, stressed that the episode count trim was story-driven. Game of Thrones fans are used to waiting, and unsurprisingly, it’ll be a while before Season 3 of House of the Dragon flies onto HBO. Season 1 premiered in the fall of 2022, with Season 2 following a couple years later with a premiere date set for the summer of 2024. Given that schedule, it sounds likely that Season 3 may not air until 2026.

Casting

House of the Dragon’s showrunners have claimed the series will last four seasons, but that may change depending on the story’s direction or show’s popularity. This episode is a slow burn that introduces new characters and indulges in gossip before unleashing that huge, fiery finale. Viserys is a vacuum, so weak that he can’t hold the bigger characters in orbit around him, and it’s becoming a problem. While it’s all starting to feel a bit familiar, this episode still manages to keep our attention – and sneak in some good dragon action. However, plans for House of the Dragon Season 3 are currently in development, with a potential fourth season on the way. Taking place over 100 years before the mainline Game of Thrones series, Season 2 of House of the Dragon will dive head-first into a civil war amongst the ruling House Targaryen, following the events of Martin's Fire & Blood book.

House of the Dragon season 2: Release date, plot, and other rumors

This is Game Of Thrones as we know it, almost to a fault, with all the same backstabbing and family dramas. But that’s no bad thing, if they can hold our attention and keep us guessing – and if we keep seeing dragons going ape like this. Away from court, Corlys and Daemon (Matt Smith) have launched their illegal war against the Crab Feeder and his armies in the Stepstones. Despite the presence of two dragons – Daemon’s Caraxes and a now older Laeron Velaryon’s (Theo Nate) Seasmoke – the war isn’t going well, somehow. The Crab Feeder and his vaguely Mongolian-coded armies keep disappearing into deep caves where, apparently, even dragonfire can’t reach, and somehow taking out fully armed battleships from a stationary base.

Episode list

However, the showrunners may take creative liberties and deviate from the source material as we’ve seen done in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon’s first season. Ahead of the looming battle, Max is promoting season 2 of House of the Dragon with two trailers — one for each Targaryen side. The dueling teasers, as they’re so-called, showcase the rivalry between Team Green in support of Alicent and Team Black representing Queen Rhaenyra. The show itself is set to last four seasons so the final episode of season 2 likely won’t show the conclusion of The Dance of the Dragons. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out which Targaryen faction claims the Iron Throne. While the first season of House of the Dragon put family drama and politics center stage, we will see a lot more action going into season 2.

Rhaenyra, between Casterly Rock and a hard place

Game of Thrones captivated audiences like almost no other TV series since the turn of the century, but its final season left us with a disappointing ending. Luckily, we only had to wait a couple of years before HBO would announce a prequel series titled House of the Dragon. Billed as the first spinoff of many, House of the Dragon released to near-universal praise in 2022, which resulted in HBO greenlighting it for a second season. As we settle into these new characters, and that blood-soaked credit sequence, it’s all feeling awfully familiar.

He now has that longed-for son, and another kid about ten minutes away from dropping, judging by the looks of Alicent (still Emily Carey for the time being). The noblemen of Westeros have assembled to pay tribute to the baby, who they assume will eventually become the king’s heir – however much he protests that he’s still backing Rhaenyra (still Milly Alcock), his anointed heir. Rhaenyra looks and feels isolated – though she also doesn’t seem to have much grasp of the politicking that might make her position more secure. Alcock isn’t too oppressive, giving the impression of someone coached in keeping her emotions under wraps. But she is also clearly ill at ease and reluctant to trust anyone around her. Other spinoffs are still in development too, including Nine Voyages, following the “legendary” voyages of Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake.

Trending on Deadline

In what is a relatively common practice, HBO did not reveal the episode order in the Season 2 renewal announcement last summer. I hear the initial plan was for another 10-episode arc, which eventually changed, leading to some script rewrites. Given the leadership change at HBO’s parent company, some pointed at Warner Bros.

Comparisons with The Rings of Power

This included a major battle that was initially set to happen near the end of the series' sophomore efforts. The latest fans heard came in January 2024, when it was reported (via Redanian Intelligence) that active development on Season 3 had gotten underway to start the year. Deadline reported in March 2023 that the reason behind Season 2's shorter episode order had Season 3 in mind, as showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik map out a third season. As the first season draws to a close, the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent deteriorates and becomes volatile. Simultaneously, Viserys’ brother Daemon comes into the picture and allies with Rhaenyra’s cause.

Vaemond is the younger brother of Corlys, and he's gone behind his and Daemon's back because they remain too proud to ask the king for help, even though they're losing the Stepstones. He's troubled, also, by Jason Lannister's offer of a spear with which to kill the beast, as well as his offering himself up as Rhaenyra Suitor Number 1. Otto makes things worse by stepping up to instead suggest a match "closer to home" — young Aegon as Rhaenyra Suitor Number 2.

GoT's opening credits gave viewers a heads-up as to which geographic locations would feature in a given week's episode. I venture to say that the HotD credits will change from week to week as well, to reflect the growth of the Targaryen dynasty — more members, more marriages, more blood from other Houses (or, you know, the same old House) entering the machine. It led to a big ratings splash for the series’ August 21 premiere, which was followed by a Season 2 renewal a few days later.

With the story being stretched out, there have been talks of a potential fourth season. Co-creators Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin have been discussing if the series should end after Season 3 or Season 4. The writers of House of the Dragon took elements from the story and fleshed them out, creating a detailed and immersive narrative that can last several seasons. In fact, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, told Deadline in May 2023 that the series could last for four seasons and even more.

These men (so many men) all feel like the upcoming victims and villains of whatever schemes the show is cooking up, so they’re probably worth keeping an eye on. If HBO is smart, it will get a move on more seasons of House of the Dragon sooner rather than later. It’s a risk to commit the resources needed to renew a show without knowing whether people will tune in to see it, but the first season of House of the Dragon was a big enough hit that it’s worth it. If HBO can manage to release new seasons at a healthy clip, they will have an edge in the competitive world of high-end fantasy TV, which is crowded right now with shows like The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, The Witcher and more. “In television, we have the new show, House of the Dragon, which has just finished filming its second season, and we’re going to be doing planning for the third season soon,” he said. Recently, filming wrapped up on the second season of House of the Dragon, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show.
